Red Hand Trophy

Postby Baldy Welshy » May 24th, 2008, 5:52 pm

Seven police bikes, one police range rover, several civilian outriders, one 65 mile loop with no flat sections.

An excellent event with sadly a small field of only about 40, as it has a reputation for being hard and hilly, and the only popular hilly events these days are sportives.

It started up a hill and stayed hilly, I expected to get blown out the back early on and so it was, being firmly in the red from the off. I only saw 7 miles before it was game over but it was not just the hills that made this a killer, it was also the elites and professionals in the peleton that started attacking from the gun. A strong side wind pushed the uphill peleton into a straight line in the gutter and with nowhere to hide or recover, gaps immediately started opening and closing in the bunch. No place here for chatting at the back and taking a few miles to warm up.

Not a pleasant experience, this is my annual shock to the system that teaches me how hard proper racing is and the giant gap between fit and race-fit.

Not that I was in it for long, but here is the usual first-class photo-report from cycling ulster...
